“Be more concerned with your character than with your reputation, because your character is what you really are.”
John Wooden
Collinsdictionary.com defines Character in a number of ways. Some of those include:
- The character of a person or place consists of all the qualities they have that make them distinct from other people or places.
- If something has a particular character, it has a particular quality.
- Your character is your personality, especially how reliable and honest you are. If someone
is of good character, they are reliable and honest. If they are of bad character, they are unreliable and dishonest.
- If you say that someone has character, you mean that they have the ability to deal effectively with difficult, unpleasant, or dangerous situations.
If we can agree that character is important, the question then becomes how often are we talking about character with our children, in our schools, in our workplaces and in our communities? How much time and energy are you committing to building and developing your
character?
“Superior ambitions have to do with the development of character, rather than status. Status you can lose. You carry character with you everywhere.”
Jordan Peterson
As a society have we become more concerned with status than with Character? Is the focus of much of social media not on status? When we talk about successful people do we talk about their character, their positive impact on others, or do we talk about titles, awards, how much money they make, what kind of car they drive and how big a house they live
in?
“Ability may get you to the top, but it takes character to keep you there.”
John Wooden
As Confucius said, “Worry not who knows of you. Seek to be worth knowing.” Seeking to be worth knowing focuses on your virtues, values, work ethic and character, while worrying who knows of you is about status.
What’s Important Now? Focus on building and developing your character.
Take care.
